In about an hour I'll be leaving for the Ciampino Airport in Roma. I'll be heading off to my Spring Break 2010!! yay!! I'm totally stoked. I don't want to sound like a baby or anything but I'm a bit nervous though. I'm so ready for fun and relaxation but I'll be by myself for the first 2 days or so in Spain. (it's raining.. boo) I'm usually fine with walking around places alone, but I hear that a few of these places are dangerous on your own. GREAT... I'll just bust out some karate or something... I hear that Spain is a great deal of fun but sketchy. I'll try my best to be safe at night. lol Now I have to switch into Spanish mode again.. I'm sure plenty of italian will come along with it. haha. Anyways.. I have to get back to packing. I just wanted to say bye for now. Love you guys!

for the love of Firenze
It's been quite a while since I've blogged on here and for that I apologize lol. I've had plenty of group projects, and I also spent the weekend in Florence! What an great city =]. It was so spread out and at the same time it wasn't hard to get places fast. Plus you could always figure out where you were by looking up. "Oh look! There's the Duomo! That way Batman!!" Lol.
There were plenty of things to see may it be shopping...
The street painting...
The mime... (the first that I've ever seen!)...
The people and the way they act.. I love this guy haha he looks so excited!...
The architecture so big that you totally can't fit in a little viewfinder.. or a in a pair of glasses...
AND of course.. the view from the top of the Duomo... Thanks Brunelleschi for the great view!
over 500 steps to the top and I find this.. it's like I was meant to be there =]
Thanks to a friend named Elio, I was able experience amazing gelato and a few great discotecas!! The gelato at Vivolis was delicious.. I wish they didn't even off the top of the gelato though. Load it up!!! haha . Unfortunately I don't have pictures from those discoteca nights lol. I think it'd be a bit dangerous for my camera in a club, but if you ever go.. club Space Electronica was awesome!! =D My buds and I were also able to experience a great meal at a restaurant that I think was called, "Al luppa e il gatto", which means the wolf and the cat. OoOh and if you go, check out the central market! It's pretty huge and has great places to eat by it as well. There was so much good stuff everywhere and if you ever get lost. Just ask for directions. Many people speak english there too if you're curious. Even if I spoke Italian.. they spoke to me in English haha.
Something else you have to go check out is the "David" in the Academia. There isn't much there but he's a must see. =] The other museums like the Ufizi houses so many works of art to see, but if you just walk around, you'll see so many other great pieces of artwork on church doors or facades. It's pretty awesome. No wonder artists and intellectuals used to come to Florence to learn during the Renaissance.
There definitely are a list of things that I'll still want to do when I go back in June but I still feel like the weekend was such a big success. Plus we met so many nice people. Our waiter at another restaurant was such a nice guy, and he recommended so many places for us to see. The biggest triumph for us was basically being able to experience the city in great weather. Sunny and no rain at all. I loved it!
Random note but... Even though I've been going to so many different places, I've been looking up for these "PACE" flags in each city..
It makes me happy to know people all over the world want the same thing.. peace. <3
The train rides we took back home was pleasant. We made conversation with an italian guy that was heading back to Rome for school. I had a bit of trouble speaking for 3 hours, but thankfully my friend Kat was with me with her 2 years experience in Italian. =]
That's basically the weekend in a nutshell! On facebook I posted up pictures from Firenze. I also posted up some pictures from the Capitoline Museum I went to in Rome that was saweeet! In addition to that... for a bonus, I just added some pictures I took during a walk to school just for kicks. =D There are two that aren't from my walk to school but OMG.. I found another great gelato place in Roma and had to post a picture of it. Boy do they load you up. It's homemade and delicious!! This is is the place...
you can find it by Via Corso.
Little handy tip from Jen: I learned in Florence that the way to know you're eating homemade gelato was to look at the banana gelato.. if it's brown then you're golden. If it's yellow.. no bueno ;)
Till next time my friends! Spring break is this upcoming week and I'm totally ready for some beach time!! wahooo!!
PS.. thank you Michael for my first piece of mail everrr in Roma!

Oh happy dayyyyy
You know it's a typical day in Italy when you walk to your apartment and there is a nice black Lamborghini parked right outside. It's pretty nice being so baller I must say. Or at least that's what I think the owner would say but in italian. :)
So it's officially Tuesday and I thought it would be nice and warm like the weekend. Nope. Rome is never going to stay sunny is it? We had such a nice weekend and the next thing you know, it's raining. Not just raining but pouring on and off. I was so sure that I was going to have a hard day and I did but don't worry, there were many pastries for me to just stuff my face with in Rome to keep me warm in the rain. Perfect. This sugar was what would also keep me awake through my classes. I only managed to get a few hours of sleep last night. Call me crazy but for some reason my body wouldn't allow me to sleep. Perhaps too much thinking? Either way, I paid dearly in the morning as I woke up to the cold.
On the brighter side... I ACED my marketing and italian midterm ! yay! I love unexpected surprises! I'm pretty exhausted as of right now but instead of going home to take a nap, I decided to stay in school and wait for practice. It's rainy and cold. I'd rather not get sick from this weather before my trip on Friday. Which leads to another piece of awesome news... I'm going to Florence, but not just GOING but I'm DRIVING with 3 others to Florence. That means we get to drive through other parts of Tuscany together too! oh happy day. Once more, I LOVE SURPRISES! You bet your bottom that I'll be bringing my camera this weekend. :D If anyone has any recommendations in Florence please feel free to let me know!
As for the rest of the night we'll see how that goes. I did get to go to this art gallery for photography which was pretty cool. There really is so much to do in this city. I only wish it wasn't so cold and rainy so often so that I could go out and explore. It'll get warmer though soon enough. For now, tea and coffee. I really should have brought heat packs with me here haha.

Another sunny day in Roma
Sunny and warm was how today started off in Rome. I spent some time sitting out on my porch as I looked out to the cupola of the Vatican. It had been a while since my legs had seen the light of day haha. They deserved a bit of time under the Roman sun. After hanging out for a little while, I received a call to head out with some friends to Via Corso, which is a major shopping street. I figured perche no, I have nothing better planned for today! While heading out I decided to bring my camera. Thankfully I got a few photos I liked before it started getting colder and darker.
I like both to be honest. Before editing these photos you couldn't even see Josh walking. We were on our way to Piazza Navona and I slowed down a bit to get this shot of him. I love how the buildings curve. it's exactly how walking down these streets feel like each day. You never really know what's around the corner or if you've taken the wrong turn around the corner till you walk it. It like forces you to explore and get lost haha.
This was on Corso. The advertisement made me laugh. It said, "Sex Sells... Too bad we just sell jeans" haha. Pretty funny no? Josh was my model for the day =D.
Our next stop was the Pantheon, which is basically a temple that was open for Romans to worship any god they wanted to. Also we saw the tomb of Rafael which was creepy cool lol.
Afterwards I went home and checked out my trips to come and of course how much money I had been spending. Gah! Thankfully I realized that a lot of what was already spent covered time near the end of my trip as well, so it wasn't just spending for the first half of my trip. Which reminds me! It has already been 2 months, come this week, that I've been in Roma! It's flying by and I hope it slows down. I know I get home sick but I just know that going back home will make me pretty homesick for Rome. Either way, I'm just going to spend my time worry free about these minor details and enjoy what I can during the time that I do have here.
I love the memories that I'm collecting. I also had my first mojito ever last night hah! It was great =] Just another smile that I can tally in my mind during my time spent exploring. <3

GOodnight!
It's pretty late and I just got back to my apartment. I decided to go to a friend's potluck tonight and we ended up going out by Trastevere to a bar near by. Everyone and their moms' were out tonight! lol! We found a really chill bar that had plenty of room to hang out and relax. I had my first Mojito ever and it was great. I normally wouldn't order one that late, but the bar wasn't crazy busy here so I didn't feel bad asking for one tonight. I know it's more of a early night drink so the bartenders don't have to spend so much time one my personal Mojito. (Even though they should, I deserve it right?! ) lol
It's kind of nice having the place to myself. In my apartment I cleaned up in the kitchen, bathroom and my room today. Went to practice. Send out some letters while at practice and cooked tonight. Got lost on the way to the potluck. Found my way there on the bus and with the help of a friend. Discovered new parts of Rome that I wanna definitely check out on my own someday, and I also booked hostel rooms for my trip to Florence next weekend.
The night life here is always fun but I think I might invest in a ring. It's the easiest way to ward off italian men. They're very persistent. Ladies, don't get the wrong idea though. Many of them are well mannered. It's the immature one's you should look out for. I realized today that when people become older here, they're a lot more well mannered. The young teens are crazy! lol They always pick on each other and are so roudy. The ones that are young adults show soOo much PDA it's wow... unreal. Either way, I'm sure they'll figure it out one way or another with age.
I also found that I have a greater appreciation for where I live. Not only is it 2 minutes away from the Vatican, but a large majority of the night buses go my stop until 5am. I LOVE that factor. Especially when I'm heading home alone. Life savers I tell yah!
Another note I'd like to put out there is that I bought some stamps. If you've been reading and would love a postcard from Italy people comment and leave your address! I'd be more than happy to send you a postcard from some of my destinations. I have a few places I'll hit up next week, spring break, and especially after school is out. I have 20 days to myself before Hai comes to Europe and I won't mind sending postcards to the US at all.
Hope all is well! Love you readers but I'm off to my bed. =] <3

It's Friday night and everyone is out for the weekend. Someone come play with me!! .. OH and if you can, please bring some oreos! I just watched a "Friends" DVD and Joey stuffed 14 in his mouth. I probably won't do that but I will dip them in milk!! =D

Trust and Tomatoes
It's Thursday.. well now it's Friday morning, and I just finished watching "Enchanted"! I love that movie lol! I figured a movie and some gelato would help me forget about my mouth that has been hurting. Thankfully it didn't effect he midterms that I took today. I felt pretty strong about all 3 but we'll see what happens! I also had "stripper" / RENT practice today and that was a nice work out. I'm so glad that I'm sticking to running to school for practice. The only bummer is that when I run back, it's late. I try to kind of avoid people late at night here, but I did get a, "ciao bella/bellissima" on the run back home. My hair was kind of nice when I got back but I was a tomato face like always after a work out...
Can't wait to keep moving forward with this RENT musical. I think we're all getting nervous because there is a lack of urgency for our directors. Oh well. Like she said, we need to just trust her. I guess I have to trust her judgement when she tells me that I'll be wearing a pair of "boy shorts" shorts/undies. WOOah. We'll see what my other outfits look like. =O.
It's 1:45 am and I can't believe I'm still awake. I'm running on 3 hours of sleep and just ran to school, practiced, and ran back. =\ I think I'm going to sleep goooooood tonight! =D No worries, I'll keep you posted on new notices about the musical!
Goodnight!

blind illumination
It's Tuesday night and I have a tummy ache and my wisdom teeth hurt. Technically just one but it sounds better than wisdom tooth. With hopes that crackers will help, I'm typing to you all with one in my mouth.
Today was a pretty nice day out. All you needed was ONE jacket lol! I'll give you all a quick run through of my day before my cracker extravaganza. I learned more than I ever had in Marketing all in one class period during our review. I got an A on my italian exam/quiz. I had a great lunch and found out the name of that pastry I wrote about previously. It's called "Bigme" with an accent on the "e". Apparently it's french and is only made from January to March for St. Joseph's birthday. Interesting huh? I still failed at pronouncing it properly though. Maybe I'll get it right tomorrow! Photography class was interesting and my professor liked my photos I posted up. That's always nice coming from and art professor. I made an great dinner composed of garlic and mushroom alfredo from scratch and a salad to go along with it on the side...
After giving myself time to digest, I ran to practice and back when it was over. =] I'm so glad I'm actually exercising! Hopefully this will be a weekly habit. It's kind of nice. Plus I have to get back in shape for the play.
To back track a little to my photography class, this was the first time that I honestly paid attention. For someone with difficulty speaking english my professor sure did catch my attention today with some things he said. Not to be big headed but I had basically heard everything before, but one thing he said made me smile. He told us to "Try to see in the eyes of a blind man". I love that. I thought to myself, that's so true! Only then could we ever really fully achieve this new dimension in photography where someone, that we may not even, know can understand what it was like to stand in our shoes. So they may see the world through our eyes. Just like living in Rome, we have to give up the way things used to be. To be blind to what our lives were to fully understand the culture and especially the language. To not judge and compare but to be like a blind man and only feel, understand, and learn. hehe.
Another set of photos that he showed was from previous years of students. A girl named Janelle Huddleson had a series of photos themed by a quote from a movie called "Everything is Illuminated" (2005). The quote was, " ...Everything is illuminated in the life of the past..." It was a beautiful collection of images and words that I liked for many reasons. My biggest one was because, to me, it's a theme that EVERYONE could relate to, but at the same time they relate to it with their own recollection of memories and experiences. This quote related to art very much so. In drawing classes, you'll learn that without light lifted from the darks on your page, you will never see your subject clearly. The only way we humans are able to see in a dark room is by searching for the light. Everything in our future has been illuminated by everything that has happened to us in the past. Like the saying goes, "you live and you learn". You learn, you hurt, you grow, and above all you see life a little more clearly than you did years ago thanks to those trials from the past. Sure some of us, including myself, try and forget the past at times, but in an optimistic perspective, things only get clearer everyday. It's very comforting don't you think? It's a great way to start gaining our vision back about the big picture after having ourselves be blinded by our day to day worries.
I absolutely had to blog about those two simple quotes. Now that my night is complete. I will venture off to my bed where I will curl into fetal position. I hope you were able to understand my rambles about these quotes, life, and art. I learned a lot today, and I hope you all gained something from my experience today. I don't know whose reading right now but I hope you're having a wonderful day.
Best,
Jen

In bocca al Lupo!
Good evening everyone!
It's midterm week and I'm so over studying and reading. I spent my day working on what is called, "The Marketing Game" for class... it's not as fun as regular games are. I read for my Art History Class, did some italian homework, and edited photos for class. Here are a few that I'm sure you'll recognize:
Today wasn't all that exciting but I did do a lot of research in regards to more trips to come. I must say, it's not too hard to find good deals as long as you do them at a decent time. I basically looked up trips to 7 destinations today and maybe booking them very soon. 6 are for the trip I'll be taking with Hai! yay! One destination is a surprise and I hope that turns out well. Wish me luck! In italian it's "In Bocca al Lupo" which translates to " In the mouth of the wolf". I know it doesn't sound very lucky to be in the mouth of a wolf, but I guess in Italy it is!
It did rain for a little bit as I was on my way to the grocery store. I really wanted to make lasagna and I found out that they didn't have any of the wider lasagna noodles. I go for pasta and it's still not there lol! Either way, I actually felt like a salad. Little did I know it would be MASSIVE! It was the size of my head and it had spinach, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, oranges, salami, asiago cheese, and balsamic vinegar. It was so much that my jaw was getting sore but it sure was good! And then I was craving toast with Jam so I made that too. Oh and a bit of Gelato. I bought a box of it just in case of emergencies lol! Yes, my name is Jen and I get really hungry sometimes.
I'm feeling a bit better as far as missing everyone goes. I'm telling you, the gelato does wonders when you're homesick! I wish it would do wonders for my wisdom teeth that are starting to be a bit of a nuisance. As far as updates on where I'll be this weekend.. I have no idea yet. Next weekend I'll be in Florence and then I have Spring Break the week after. Anyone have any suggestions of places I have to see in Europe? I'm so up for any ideas!
I think I'm going to head off to bed now. I just wanted to say hello to you all. Have a great night!

It was kind of hard to edit some of these because I didn't have the right settings on but hopefully I'll learn next time to take pictures in RAW settings.
